Oh, hot damn, this is a cracker of an antique ring! Two intertwined snakes coil around the finger in a sculptural embrace, their heads meeting at the front and set with glittering old-cut diamonds. Crafted in Birmingham circa 1907 from rich 18-carat yellow gold, it's exactly the kind of highly sought-after antique snake ring collectors go mad for.
The snake has long carried symbolic weight in jewellery, most famously as a symbol of eternal love and wisdom, a motif popularised in the 19th century after Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring. A double-headed design, with two serpents facing one another, is a less common variation on the theme, often read as a symbol of unity or of two lives bound together.
