Sexy, slinky, and very rock and roll. This rare Victorian guard chain is crafted in dark gunmetal, its long, fluid links punctuated with ball detailing and finished with a dog clip for hanging a favourite pendant, locket or charm. At an extraordinary 57 inches long, it can be worn loose and languid, doubled up, layered with other chains - or however the heck you like.

Despite its dramatic length, it's wonderfully lightweight to wear, making this an unusually versatile piece of Victorian jewellery.

And then there's the gunmetal. Traditionally an alloy of copper, tin and zinc, it takes its name from its historic use in weaponry. By the late Victorian aesthetic movement, its strength and distinctive dark, matte finish had found a rather more seductive purpose in jewellery and decorative objects highlighting the societal customs surrounding remembrance and mourning dress.
