With their jagged edges and dark disposition, these babies scream Victorian Gothic. Big, bold and beautifully brooding, these Victorian Whitby Jet earrings were made to be noticed.

Each elongated oval drop is intricately carved around its serrated edge and delicately etched through the centre with a striking geometric and foliate motif. Suspended from Jet loops and finished with silver shepherd hooks, they have wonderful movement at the ear. Dramatic, but remarkably lightweight to wear.

And what could be more Victorian than Whitby Jet? Formed from fossilised wood over millions of years and found along the coast around Whitby in North Yorkshire, its extraordinary depth of black and ability to take intricate carving made it one of the defining materials of nineteenth-century jewellery. Its popularity soared during Queen Victoria's long period of mourning, when black jewellery became fashionable throughout Britain.
