Suffragettes were the original rebels, fighting like hell for women's rights. Perhaps we should revive the movement and add some rock and roll!
This exquisite antique necklace combines delicate seed pearls with a vibrant round peridot and two deliciously pink-purple tourmaline drops, all set in 15-carat yellow gold and suspended from an 18-carat gold chain.
Green, white and violet became closely associated with the British women's suffrage movement. They're colours traditionally linked with hope, purity and dignity. Jewellery in these colours has since become enormously collectable and is often described as “suffragette jewellery,” with the initials G-W-V popularly interpreted as a secret code for Give Women Votes.
Whether this particular necklace was originally worn as a declaration of political allegiance, we may never know. What we do know is that it was created during an extraordinary period of social change, when women were demanding something radical: a voice.
