This extraordinary antique pendant was crafted in Paris in the 1870s from 18-carat yellow gold, in the form of a pointed heart. Its edges are dressed with hand-applied gold granulation, each tiny bead individually placed by a Parisian goldsmith. This was the height of the Etruscan Revival, when the great French jewellery houses were looking to the ancient world for inspiration and producing pieces of almost impossible refinement.

Twin volute scrolls crown the top. At the pointed base sits a single baroque pearl, soft and luminous amongst all that gold.

And gazing out from her heart of gold, diamonds sparkling in her hair, is a portrait of a woman painted on porcelain in the Orientalist tradition, part of that great nineteenth-century European fascination with the exotic and the imagined East.

She has been captivating people for a hundred and fifty years and counting...
