Crafted in rich 15-carat yellow gold, a luminous cluster of seed pearls forms an eight-pointed star at its centre, set against a dramatic flash of cobalt-blue enamel. Layer upon layer of intricate goldwork radiates outwards, with delicate beading, twisted wire and bold ropework giving the whole piece extraordinary depth and texture.

And because the Victorians knew more is more, she does double duty. Wear her as a magnificent brooch, or suspend her from a substantial gold chain or velvet ribbon as an unforgettable pendant. On the reverse, a glazed locket compartment once held a treasured photograph or lock of hair, bringing a wonderfully intimate little secret to all that grandeur.

Stars held particular romantic significance in Victorian jewellery, associated with love, guidance and constancy — a tiny point of light in the darkness. More than a century later, this one is still shining pretty damn bright.
