A highly sought after design for antique jewellery collectors, this chunky antique rings crafted in Birmingham circa 1907 from 18-carat yellow gold, is modelled as two intertwined snakes, their heads meeting at the front of the shaft in a coiled, sculptural embrace. Each head is channel-set with old-cut diamonds running along the curve of the body, catching the light as the coils wrap toward the shoulders, while the textured gold scales and modelled heads give the piece dimension and movement on the hand.
The snake has long carried symbolic weight in jewellery, most famously as a symbol of eternal love and wisdom, a motif popularised in the 19th century after Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring. A double-headed design, with two serpents facing one another, is a less common variation on the theme, often read as a symbol of unity or of two lives bound together.
